Laila Gohar
Show-stopping food artist and feast curator
Dalí may have turned food into art with his Les Diners de Gala parties but Egyptian-born, New-York based Laila Gohar is busy blurring the lines between food, art, fashion and design with surreal edible installations that resemble what may have happened had Lewis Carroll ever met Escoffier at the court of Louis XIV. A chair made from cake, eggs in a chandelier and swans fashioned from artichoke leaves are a few highlights – as was last year’s appearance at design show Alcova, an offshoot of Salone del Mobile. Gohar is fast becoming a household name thanks to her homeware designs for Danish brand Hay and the must-have lace bonnet for a tomato created by Gohar World, the tableware brand she started with her sister Nadia. This year she is designing barware for Marriott Luxury Collection hotels in Kyoto, Paris and LA.
